The United States has refused to sign a non-binding United Nations mandate that would decriminalize homosexuality (throughout many countries of the world homosexuality is a crime). Should the United States be more openly supportive of gay rights? Below are reasons why I support the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality, along with equal rights for homosexual Americans in this country.
1) The United States was founded on the principle of equal opportunity for all. Failure to give gay Americans the same rights as heterosexual Americans is simply hypocritical and a slap in the face to American history. I feel strongly it is an inevitability that homosexuals will work for and achieve equal rights in this country, just as African-Americans and women famously have. Liberalization in terms of rights for the oppressed is not only etched in our history, but part of this country's opportunity and eventual destiny.
2) Politically, this should be a no-brainer for Republicans. As clearly being against gay rights is fighting a losing battle, wouldn't it be better for us to spend our time battling an issue we can win?
